Danny Rahim talks about Primeval New World
Last but not least, my interview with Danny Rahim, Mac in Primeval New World.
What was the first thing you thought reading the script? The plot has attracted you immediately?
I was only initially given very small parts of the script as there are lots of twists and turns that had to remain secret. As we began to get the episodes I could see that there was huge potential for the project, my character and the various relationships. The opportunity to work with ‘dinosaurs’ was very exciting too.
Were you a fan of the original Primeval?
I had seen a couple of episodes of the early series and then a few more of the fifth but I was too caught up in shows like The Wire and Sopranos to watch it religiously.
How would you describe your character, Mac Rendell ?
Mac is a fun loving, happy go lucky kind of guy. He is very loyal and loves the unknown. Would he jump through an anomaly given the chance? Definitely. Because of his military background He has a fascination with weaponry and vehicles and gets to explore that a lot through the series.
Do you think there are any similarities between you and your character or Mac is very far away from you?
There were huge similarities between Mac and I and it was only after being cast and in a readthrough for one of the early episodes we realized how much we had in common. None of this had really been discussed through the audition process as the character was kept very ambiguous. I was amazed when the writers started talking about back stories and asked us if we had anything we liked to add and I just said “That is me!”
How would you describe your character’s relationship with Evan Cross?
Evan is like an older brother to Mac. They look out for one another. Evan comes to the UK and offers Mac a way out of his troubled youth, a fresh start. This is where the bond and the trust come from. I also think they share the same sense of humour which is funny because Niall and I do too. We lived together in Vancouver which was great for developing our friendship.
Your character has a lot of interaction with the creatures?
Mac has a lot of interaction with the dinosaurs, pretty much a new one in every episode. How he deals with them is another story entirely…
What is your favorite scene of the season premiere?
The finale was epic. When we first got the episodes through I remember initially thinking it was a joke because of the scale of it… You’re in for a treat!
What do you think are the strengths of Primeval New World, compared to the original series?
Location. We were filming in Vancouver which is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It offers so much potential for a show like ours. An hours drive from the centre gets you to the mountains, the beaches or land that looks like a desert. It added so much value to the production.
The series is very action-packed. How did you prepare, both physically and mentally, to shoot?
In the one day I had between being offered the part and flying to Vancouver I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. I’m very active in my everyday life so didn’t need much preparation in that department. Mentally was just managing the excitement..
Is there anything else you want to say or anticipate to your fan?
We had a blast making it and I hope you enjoy it!
Special thanks to Danny Rahim for his time and to Crystal Braunwarth!
